Mary Elizabeth Williams’ Salon article about Susan Boyle’s Asperger’ diagnosis is a wonderful look at a woman who has struggled all of her life to make sense of herself. The diagnosis of Asperger’s makes sense to Susan Boyle. It was a long time in coming. She is 52. We all struggle with constructing narratives that make sense of who we are in the world. Boyle had to factor in an amazing voice with feedback that saw her as “Susie Simple.” The diagnosis and the understanding that follows allow her to modify the narrative that left her feeling depressed and inadequate. Her life and purpose now come together differently. “I am here for a reason,” she says, “and it must be to make people happy.” Good job, Ms. Boyle.
